The Cross River State Ministry of Health has announced plans to host a high-level colloquium/public lecture in commemoration of the remarkable strides achieved in the health sector within the first two years of Governor Bassey Otu’s administration.

The event, themed “Two Years of Governor Bassey Otu and the Revitalization of Cross River’s Health Sector,” will highlight key milestones that have repositioned healthcare delivery across the state under the oversight of the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, the Secretary of the Central Planning Committee and Director of Administration in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Agba William, said the colloquium is designed as a platform to showcase the governor’s people-centered reforms in the health sector while fostering dialogue on sustaining the gains.

“In just two years, the Otu-led administration has transformed the health sector through revitalization of over 90 primary healthcare centres under the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project and other government and partner initiatives, the construction and upgrading of general hospitals, institutionalization of free outreach and health palliative program for the poor and vulnerable, the takeoff of anti quackery services, establishment of a health commodity and drug management agency, the reactivation of counterpart funding and vigorous public private partnerships, acquisition of a permanent office for the State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), installation of oxygen plants, commissioning of ICT-driven training facilities, reinvention of health insurance services and the launch of digital health solutions in partnership with private sector players.

“This colloquium will not only highlight these achievements but also engage stakeholders on the path ahead,” Mr. William stated.

He explained that the public lecture and panel discussions on will draw participation from health professionals, donor agencies, civil society, traditional institutions, political leaders, and members of the public, with award presentations to partners and individuals who have contributed significantly to the sector’s progress.

The colloquium is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the State Library Complex, Calabar, by 10:00 a.m.

According to Mr. William, the event will reaffirm Cross River’s commitment to building a sustainable, people-first health system that guarantees access and equity for all citizens.
