By Bassey BASSEY

The Managing Director of Arittgray Nigeria Limited, Engr. Israel Uboh has assured the Chiefs and Stakeholders of the Onyadama Community in Obubra Local Government Area that his company will provide boreholes to mitigate the effects of water pollution allegedly linked to mining activities in the Agoi Nation.

Engr. Uboh made this commitment during a high level meeting convened at the instance of the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Mike Etaba following widespread concerns by residents over contamination of water sources in the area.

While clarifying that Arittgray Nigeria Limited had yet to commence mining operations in the region scheduled to begin in October, he emphasized that his company was not responsible for the pollution currently being experienced.

“We have not started operations in this area but as a responsible company, we will take responsibility for what has happened and play our part in addressing the problem,” he said.

“That is why we are promising to provide boreholes for the affected communities to ensure they have access to clean and safe drinking water.”

He also gave his word that Arittgray would carry all host communities along in its operational plans and development initiatives.

According to him, the company is committed to building mutual trust, foster local partnerships and also ensure that communities benefit directly from their presence.

“We are here for development. We ask for your support and cooperation. If we work together, the benefits that will come to this area will be significant,” he added.

The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, community representatives, youth leaders and stakeholders many of whom expressed appreciation for the willingness of the company to engage and take proactive steps ahead of operations.

Hon. Mike Etab, who facilitated the meeting described the engagement as timely and necessary and urged both parties to maintain open communication and a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

The issue of water contamination in Onyadama and surrounding communities has sparked growing concerns in recent months with residents pointing to mining activities as a possible cause.

Though Arittgray has denied involvement in any prior operations, their pledge to support the affected communities has been hailed as a commendable gesture of corporate social responsibility.
