ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike, Gives FG One-Month Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike declared last week across public universities in the country.
The suspension was announced on Wednesday at a press conference held at the union’s headquarters in Abuja by ASUU President, Dr. Chris Piwuna.
Dr. Piwuna said the decision followed the intervention of the Senate and other well-meaning Nigerians, who appealed for dialogue between the union and the Federal Government.
He explained that the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU resolved to give the Federal Government a one-month window to address all outstanding issues, particularly those contained in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.
According to him, the suspension takes effect from midnight of Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Dr. Piwuna, however, warned that the union would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to meet its demands within the stipulated period.
He also appealed to patriotic Nigerians and stakeholders in the education sector to prevail on the government to speed up the renegotiation process and ensure full implementation of the 2009 agreement.
