A'Ibom Assembly Demand Disciplinary Action Against Medical Personnel Over Negligence

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Committee on Health has demanded immediate disciplinary action against medical personnel, whose alleged negligence led to the tragic death of a pregnant woman and her newborn at the Ikot Ekpene General Hospital.

Chairman of the Committee and member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Moses Essien, made the demand during a meeting with the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John, and Permanent Secretaries from both the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board at the Assembly complex.

He described the incident as a preventable tragedy and frowned at the alleged professional lapses by on-duty medical staff.

He assured that the House would ensure appropriate actions are taken against all those found culpable in the unfortunate incident.

“The House of Assembly will not rest until appropriate sanctions are meted out,” Essien declared,

“You are the head of the Ministry of Health, and the cursor is on you to make the necessary recommendations to the Governor.”

Essien also expressed disappointment over the continued decay in facilities at the Ikot Ekpene General Hospital, ranging from lack of constant power supply, to water supply and insufficient medical personnel, despite the Assembly’s ₦500 million allocation in the 2025 budget for its rehabilitation.

According to the lawmaker, such failures were inimical to Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda for healthcare reform.

Responding, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John described the incident as “unfortunate,” maintaining that no medical practitioner takes pride in maternal mortality.

He disclosed that on the directive of Governor Umo Eno, an investigative panel to probe the unfortunate incident, and submit a report for necessary action.

However, he assured lawmakers and the public that justice would be served, and disclosed that hospital records of the victim had been secured to prevent tampering and that all staff on duty during the incident had been issued formal queries.

He urged the public and the House to allow the panel to complete its work before conclusions are drawn.
