Okpebholo Denies Threat Against Peter Obi, Urges Adherence to Security Protocols

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has categorically denied allegations that he issued threats against former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, following the latter’s recent visit to Benin City.
Mr. Obi was in Edo State on July 7, 2025, where he donated ₦15 million to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences to support ongoing infrastructure development at the institution.
Following the visit, reports emerged suggesting that Governor Okpebholo had cautioned Mr. Obi against making unscheduled visits to the state, citing concerns over the current security climate. The remarks sparked widespread criticism from members of the public and notable figures, including prominent human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who called on the governor to withdraw the comments and issue a public apology.
However, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo clarified that his comments had been misinterpreted and that at no point did he threaten Mr. Obi.
“The attention of the Edo State Government has been drawn to various misinterpretations surrounding the recent remarks made by His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, regarding Mr. Peter Obi’s visit to Benin,” the statement said.
“At no point did the Governor threaten Mr. Obi. What he emphasized was the necessity for prominent individuals—particularly politically exposed persons—to notify the state authorities and obtain security clearance ahead of public engagements.”
As the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Okpebholo stressed that these protocols are not political, but standard security measures designed to protect both visitors and residents, particularly in light of rising insecurity across the country. He cited recent incidents of targeted attacks on religious leaders as part of the rationale for such precautions.
The statement further noted: “In today’s volatile security climate, bypassing established protocols presents avoidable risks. This is not about political partisanship; it is a matter of responsibility. Ironically, Mr. Obi himself, while serving as Governor of Anambra State, ordered the detention of then Minister Nasir El-Rufai for entering the state without prior notice or clearance.”
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to a secure, inclusive, and politically tolerant environment, while cautioning against what it described as the politicization of routine security procedures.
“Edo State will not allow political activities, by any individual or party, to compromise the safety and security of its people. The Governor’s call is for proper coordination and respect for local protocols, not an expression of hostility.”
Governor Okpebholo’s administration further maintained that its position reflects a responsible approach to governance amid inherited security challenges, and should not be misconstrued as political intimidation or antagonism.
