2027: PDP Carpets Otu, Says C'River Lacks Visible Projects

The Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State has criticised the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, accusing it of failing to deliver impactful projects and meaningful governance nearly three years after coming into office.

The state chairman of the PDP, Barrister Venatius Ikem, made the remarks in a post published on his verified Facebook page, where he described the administration as “mediocrity wearing the garb of People First.”

Ikem alleged that the government had focused more on social events than developmental achievements since its inauguration.

According to him, the administration’s most celebrated moments had revolved around family ceremonies rather than commissioning major projects across the state.

“It is remarkable that in three years, the highest points of Governor Prince Otu’s administration have not been the commissioning of any development project, but the celebration of his stepchildren’s marriages and, of course, Her Excellency’s birthday,” he wrote.

The PDP chairman further claimed that such ceremonies had become the administration’s major attraction for prominent personalities visiting the state.

He disclosed that the opposition party had prepared what he termed the government’s performance scorecard and would soon present it to Cross River residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We have the scorecard and we are polishing it for our people to be the judges,” Ikem stated.

He also criticised the government’s response to recent protests over alleged medical negligence in state owned hospitals, accusing security agencies of suppressing demonstrators with force.

According to him, protesters who expressed concerns over avoidable deaths and poor healthcare services were allegedly confronted with teargas and police brutality.

Ikem insisted that the PDP would continue to monitor activities of the administration and hold the government accountable to the people.

Political conversations across the state have recently centred on concerns over the pace of ongoing projects as well as the continued non payment of gratuities owed to retirees despite increased federal allocations and improved internally generated revenue.

There have also been speculations over an alleged plan to replace the lawmaker representing Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Calabar South Federal Constituency, Joseph Bassey, with the governor’s stepson, Edem Dominic, ahead of the 2027 elections.
