Rovers FC Chairman Bags Chieftaincy Title

The Chairman of Rovers Football Club, Calabar, Chief Etim Okon, has been honoured with the prestigious traditional title of Iboto Obio by the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, His Royal Highness Etubom Nyong Okon Effiom Ewa.

The colourful ceremony, held at the palace of the paramount ruler, drew traditional leaders, community elders, sports administrators, and well-wishers who gathered to celebrate Chief Okon’s remarkable contributions to youth development and sports promotion in Cross River State.

In his address, HRH Etubom Ewa described Chief Okon as a distinguished son of Calabar South whose dedication to football and youth empowerment has earned him admiration and respect across the state.

“Chief Etim Okon has shown outstanding leadership and service through sports. His efforts in nurturing young talents and promoting unity through football are commendable. The title Iboto Obio, meaning ‘Pillar of the Community,’ is truly well-deserved,” the monarch said.

Responding, Chief Okon expressed gratitude to the royal father and the people of Calabar South for the honour, pledging to redouble his efforts in promoting community development through sports and youth engagement.

“This honour is a great encouragement to do more. I dedicate it to the people of Calabar South and to everyone who believes in the power of sports to transform lives,” he stated.

The Vice Chairman of Rovers FC and veteran coach, Eta Egbe, described the recognition as a reward for Chief Okon’s dedication, humility, and passion for football development in the state.

“Chief Okon has been a pillar of strength to Rovers FC. His commitment to the welfare of players and his determination to reposition the club are commendable. This honour truly reflects his impact both on and off the pitch,” Egbe said.

Also speaking, the Secretary of Rovers FC, Emmanuel Cobham, Esq., congratulated the chairman on the conferment, noting that the traditional title would further inspire him to continue his service to humanity.

Cobham explained that the title, which translates to Shelter and Coverage, symbolizes Chief Okon’s unwavering support and contributions to the community.

“Chief Okon’s leadership has brought renewed energy to Rovers FC. Beyond football, he has become a symbol of hope for many young people in Calabar South. This recognition by the traditional council is both fitting and timely,” he added.

The ceremony ended with cultural performances and goodwill messages from sports enthusiasts and community leaders who praised Chief Okon for his exemplary leadership and enduring commitment to grassroots development.
