PRESS RELEASE: CROSS RIVER STATE COMMAND MOVES TO CONTROL PROLIFERATION OF PROHIBITED FIREARMS AND IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY
In it continuous effort to ensure safety of lives and property in the State, the Cross River State Command Anti-Kidnapping Squad (Dragon Team) attached to Ikom while on routine patrol, intercepted a security outfit brandishing firearms around Prince Nico Junction along Border Road Ikom.
Three suspects were arrested, they include; One Ayang Awunge Eyam ‘m’ age 38yrs, one Enya Agban Osa ‘m’ age 43yrs and one Ntun Obim Enim ‘m’ age 34yrs and the following arms where recovered from them; one (1) English Made Pump Action with Six (6) live cartridges, one (1) locally made Revolver long gun with one (1) live cartridge and one (1) locally made long gun. Suspects claimed to be members of a Vigilante Group and that they have no license for possession of the firearms. They are currently been interrogated.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua, psc, mnips reacting to the arrest hinted that the Firearms Act prohibits possession of certain categories of firearms without a license from the President or the Inspector General of Police and the ones in their possession fall within some of these categories.
He advised members of the public, to study the Act carefully for guidance.
