FRSC Moves to Restore Order on Cross River Highways After Deadly Truck Crashes

By Ebi COLLINS

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River Sector Command, has intensified efforts to restore discipline on the state’s highways following a series of fatal crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles, particularly along the Odukpani–Itu corridor.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Innocent Tommy Etuk, disclosed that the Corps is strengthening enforcement operations as part of renewed measures to curb reckless driving and reduce avoidable loss of lives on major roads in the state.

He said the decision follows growing concern over repeated crashes linked to truck drivers, with recent incidents highlighting urgent gaps in compliance with road safety regulations.

Etuk noted that some of the recurring causes of accidents include brake failure, excessive speed, wrongful overtaking, and loss of control, especially among drivers of articulated vehicles.

He stressed that the FRSC is no longer treating such violations with leniency, as they continue to endanger innocent road users and undermine public safety.

According to him, the Corps is working closely with relevant security agencies and stakeholders in the transport sector to ensure sustained joint enforcement and coordinated monitoring of highway activities.

He explained that the renewed clampdown will target truck drivers, vehicle owners, and fleet operators who fail to meet safety standards or disregard traffic rules.

The Sector Commander warned that offenders will face strict legal consequences, as the Corps seeks to bring lasting sanity to the roads.

Etuk also referenced a recent crash involving students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), which resulted in four deaths and multiple injuries, describing it as a preventable tragedy that underscores the urgency of intervention.

He reiterated that restoring order on the highways requires both enforcement and cooperation from transport unions, operators, and motorists.

The FRSC maintained that its goal is to significantly reduce road traffic crashes in Cross River State through sustained enforcement, public sensitization, and strict compliance with safety regulations.
