Ugep Residents Decry Commercial Motorcycle Fare Hike, Say Leadership Insensitive
By Missang AKPET
Residents of Ugep Urban in Yakurr Local Government Area have kicked against a recent increase in commercial motorcycle fares, describing the new rate as unfair and insensitive to prevailing economic realities.
The fare hike was announced by the newly elected Chairman of Okada Riders Union in Ugep Urban, Mr. Ofem Felix Denise, who raised the cost of a short drop from ₦300 to ₦500 within four months of assuming office.
Residents have questioned the justification for the increase, arguing that Ugep is not a large city and distances between streets and communities remain relatively short.
“What distance within Ugep truly justifies ₦500 for a single drop?”. This is not just a price adjustment; it feels like extortion" Clement Ikoi Lamented.
Many residents said the increase has worsened hardship at a time when Nigerians are grappling with rising costs of living. They noted that families depend on okada for daily movement to work, school, and the market.
Critics likened the decision to the hardship that followed fuel subsidy removal at the national level, saying local leadership should not introduce policies that further burden citizens.
“Any administration that begins by increasing the burden on its people sends a wrong signal. It reflects poor priorities and a lack of empathy,” James Okoi said.
Some residents have proposed alternatives to ease transportation challenges, including the introduction of tricycles, popularly known as Keke, at organised parks connecting different parts of the town. They argued that a structured system would provide a more affordable and reliable option.
