Trouble Brews in NDC as Kwankwaso Threatens Exit Over Candidate Swap

Fresh crisis is brewing in the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, after the party replaced several candidates submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State, triggering threats of a mass exit by Kwankwasiyya national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to a report by DAILY POST, the Kano NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, signed a revised candidate list citing “breach of a power-sharing agreement” between the party’s original structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

The document, copied to National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, effected changes across Federal Constituency and State Assembly tickets.

New Federal Constituency candidates approved by NDC include

- Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani – Kumbotso

- Nasiru Ali Ahmed – Nassarawa

- Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id – Kano Municipal

- Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim – Doguwa/Tudun Wada

- Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar – Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa

- Ibrahim Bashir Bango – Sumaila/Takai

- Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata – Gwale

Adjustments were also made to Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu.

The party insists the shake-up aligns with a standing 60-40 sharing formula: 60% for Kwankwasiyya, 40% for the original NDC structure. But the unilateral replacements have sparked anger in the Kwankwasiyya camp.

Kwankwaso is now threatening to pull his faction out of NDC if the original candidates are not reinstated, sources close to the bloc said.

The development has exposed deep cracks in the coalition ahead of 2027, raising questions about the party’s unity and ability to manage internal power deals.
