Simeone’s Future in Doubt After Atletico Exit

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is facing renewed uncertainty over his future following the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Arsenal F.C..

Atletico were eliminated after a 1-0 defeat in London on Tuesday, which sealed a 2-1 aggregate loss and extended their trophy drought to five consecutive seasons.

Speaking after the match, Simeone gave a strikingly cautious response when asked if he still had the energy to continue in charge.

“Not now, definitely not now,” the Argentine coach said, a statement that immediately sparked speculation about his long term future at the club.

Simeone has been at the helm of Atletico Madrid for more than 14 years and has faced similar questions in previous seasons, particularly after major European disappointments.

Some of the most painful moments of his tenure came in the UEFA Champions League finals of 2014 and 2016, both lost to city rivals Real Madrid CF.

The 2016 defeat on penalties in Milan was especially difficult, with Simeone admitting afterward that he had considered stepping down due to the emotional toll on the squad.

Despite those setbacks, Simeone guided Atletico to the La Liga title in 2021. However, the club has since struggled to maintain consistent success while competing against Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Reflecting on the club’s progress, Simeone maintained that Atletico had grown significantly under his leadership.

“We’ve grown enormously in every aspect. We’re a club recognised in Europe and the world,” he said.

“But the fans want to win. Getting to a semi final isn’t enough.”

Although widely known for his defensive tactical approach, Simeone has this season attempted to evolve Atletico into a more attacking side without losing their trademark intensity.

Despite the Champions League disappointment, Atletico’s campaign included some positive moments.

The club reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time since 2013, although they lost on penalties to Real Sociedad.

Several players also stood out during the season, including Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, who made an immediate impact after joining in January.

Simeone’s son, Giuliano Simeone, also showed promise, while defender Marc Pubill has impressed enough to be considered for Spain’s squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Atletico’s Champions League run also featured a notable quarter final victory over Barcelona, offering brief optimism before their eventual elimination.

Veteran players Antoine Griezmann and Koke may also be nearing the end of their European journey with the club.

Griezmann is reportedly linked with a move to Orlando City SC in Major League Soccer, while Koke’s future remains undecided.

“I hope our fans give Antoine the backing he’s earned in these last few matches,” Simeone said.

“Koke was incredible, a masterclass in how to play football at his age.”

With a difficult season now concluded, attention has turned to whether Simeone will continue to lead Atletico into the next campaign or bring an end to one of the longest managerial reigns in modern European football.
