The Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, has described the Calabar Carnival as a unique cultural asset that must be protected, sustained and promoted as a global brand.
Senator Jarigbe made the remark at the grand finale of the 2025 Calabar Carnival, themed Traces of Time, held in Calabar, where he joined thousands of residents, tourists and stakeholders to witness the colourful climax of Africa’s Biggest Street Party.
The 20th edition of the carnival was marked by dazzling street parades, elaborate costumes, energetic performances and rich cultural expressions showcased by competing bands, reinforcing the festival’s status as one of Africa’s most celebrated tourism events.
Speaking at the event, the lawmaker commended the administration of Governor Bassey Otu for what he described as deliberate efforts to revive and reposition the carnival after years of decline.
According to him, the successful staging of the 2025 edition reflects renewed commitment by the state government to restoring the carnival’s prestige and economic value.
Senator Jarigbe noted that beyond entertainment, the Calabar Carnival serves as a powerful platform for promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage, stimulating local businesses and attracting international visitors.
He urged both government and the private sector to deepen collaboration in funding, branding and marketing the carnival to ensure its sustainability and global competitiveness.
The senator said a strong public private partnership would not only protect the carnival as a cultural identity of Cross River State but also enhance its potential as a major driver of tourism, hospitality and job creation.
He further applauded the state government’s consistency in sustaining the festival, stressing that such commitment aligns with the broader vision of positioning Cross River as a leading tourism and hospitality destination in Nigeria and across Africa.
The 2025 Calabar Carnival once again reaffirmed its place as a symbol of unity, creativity and cultural pride, drawing participants and spectators from across the country and beyond.
