Four Police Officers Arrested for Allegedly Extorting ₦53,000 from ICPC Chairman at Illegal Checkpoint

Four police officers have been arrested in Abuja for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC), at an illegal checkpoint.

According to SAHARA REPORTERS, the officers were apprehended after they reportedly stopped the ICPC Chairman’s vehicle at an unauthorized checkpoint and collected the sum of ₦53,000.

The incident has sparked outrage, with observers noting the irony of law enforcement officers allegedly extorting the head of the country’s anti-corruption agency.

Authorities confirmed that the four officers have been taken into custody and are currently undergoing investigation. The Nigeria Police Force is yet to release an official statement on the disciplinary actions to be taken.

The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by the Police leadership to weed out unprofessional conduct and illegal checkpoints within the FCT and across the country.

The ICPC, as the nation’s lead agency in the fight against corruption, has been at the forefront of investigations and prosecutions of corrupt practices in public and private institutions.
