2027: 241 Candidates Cleared By INEC To Contest 36 Elective Positions In C' River As ADC, NDC Out of Governorship's Race

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 241 candidates to contest for 36 elective positions in Cross River state in the 2027 general elections.

However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will not field candidates in the Feb. 6, 2027 governorship election in Cross River will not take part in governorship race following their omission from the final list of cleared candidates released by INEC.

The electoral body released the final list on Saturday, with only eight political parties having candidates for the governorship election.The positions comprise the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats.

The parties are the All Progressives Congress (APC), All Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Labour Party (LP), Action Alliance (AA), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the list, Nya Bassey of the APP is the youngest governorship candidate, while Gov. Bassey Otu of the APC and Ali Patrick of the AA are the oldest at 66 years each.

The list shows that eight candidates are vying for the governorship, 25 for the three senatorial seats, 63 for the eight House of Representatives seats and 145 for the 24 State House of Assembly seats.

Of the 241 candidates, 198 are male and 43 female, representing 82.2 per cent and 17.8 per cent, respectively.

Calabar South State Constituency has the highest number of female contestants, with seven candidates.

The APC, ADC and NDC each fielded five female candidates, despite the ADC and NDC having no candidates cleared for the governorship election.

A total of 14 political parties are participating in the elections in the state, but only the APC fielded candidates for all the elective positions.

The youngest candidate is 26-year-old Aboh Glady of the AA, who is contesting for a seat in the State House of Assembly.

The oldest candidates are 69-year-old Asuquo Asuquo and Francis Ukpanyang, both of the ADP, contesting for Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency and Calabar South State Constituency, respectively.
