C' River Steps Up Flood Control, Clears Blocked Drainages in Calabar

‎The Cross River Government has stepped up flood-control measures in Calabar with the immediate desilting and restoration of blocked drainage channels and drainages across the metropolis.

‎

‎Mr Bassey Mensah, Commissioner for Environment, who inspected the ongoing work on Thursday, said the intervention was part of the administration’s efforts to address critical environmental challenges across the metropolis.

‎

‎The places inspected were along Murtala Mohammed Highway, opposite Zone 6 Police Station aimed at saving lives and property.

‎

‎The intervention, carried out around Surefoot International School and adjoining streets, is aimed at reducing perennial flooding, improving drainage, protecting infrastructure, and ensuring safer movement of motorists and pedestrians during rainfall.

‎

‎The Commissioner said the intervention was part of the administration’s efforts to address critical environmental challenges across the metropolis.

‎

‎Mensah said the government was determined to keep waterways and drainage channels free of debris and other obstructions that impede the free flow of stormwater.

‎

‎He urged residents to comply with environmental regulations and desist from dumping refuse, plastics, and other materials in drainage channels.

‎

‎According to him, effective flood control requires the cooperation of residents alongside government intervention.

‎

‎The commissioner said the ministry would sustain the desilting and clearing of blocked waterways in other flood-prone areas of the metropolis.

‎

‎He said the ongoing intervention had also covered parts of Efio-Ete, Parliamentary Road, and adjoining streets, while Abon Asang and other areas had been scheduled for subsequent desilting and flood-control works.

‎

‎Mensah said the ministry had also undertaken environmental and structural flood-control interventions around the green areas of the Margaret Ekpo International Airport along IBB Way.

‎

‎He said topsoil was being placed on damaged sections of the airport field to create a suitable bed for the replanting of grass and restoration of the affected areas.

‎

‎The commissioner reiterated the state government’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner and safer environment while strengthening measures to mitigate the impact of flooding in Calabar.
