N'Assembly Transmits State Police Bill To Tinubu For Assent
The National Assembly has transmitted the Constitution amendment bill seeking to establish State Police to President Bola Tinubu for assent after securing approval from 30 State Houses of Assembly.
The development was announced during Wednesday's plenary after the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, read a notice from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
According to the notice, the office of the Clerk had received approvals from 29 State Assemblies as of the close of business on Tuesday, November 3.
The number rose to 30 on Wednesday, thereby meeting and exceeding the constitutional requirement of two-thirds of the 36 state legislatures for a constitution amendment.
The bill, which seeks to remove policing from the exclusive legislative list and create a framework for states to establish their own police forces, has been a major demand amid rising insecurity across the country.
With the transmission, President Tinubu is expected to assent to the bill, paving the way for state governments to commence the process of setting up state police.
