The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that England-born goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is set to make his debut for the Super Eagles at next month’s Unity Cup tournament.

Okonkwo recently completed his switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria after previously representing England at youth level. The 24-year-old featured for England’s U16, U17 and U18 teams before receiving FIFA approval on Monday to play for Nigeria at senior level.

An NFF official, who spoke to ESPN, said the goalkeeper showed strong enthusiasm toward the move, making the process smooth for the federation. The official added that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is keen to integrate him into the squad ahead of the tournament.

“He was very enthusiastic about switching allegiance and playing for Nigeria, and that made things easier for us,” the official said.

“The coach, Eric Chelle, wants him and would like to have him in the squad as soon as possible.”

Okonkwo, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, has impressed this season with consistent performances. He has made 42 appearances across all competitions and recorded 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches, placing him among the top-performing goalkeepers in the league.

Nigeria is expected to open its Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe on May 26, 2026, at The Valley, home ground of Charlton Athletic in England.
