UNICAL VC Vows to End Over Admission

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has stated unequivocally that over-admission will no longer be tolerated under his administration.

Prof. Offiong made this assertion while receiving officials of the College of Medical Sciences during a courtesy visit to his office at the Council Chamber of the University, said the practice of over admitting students in some departments has come to an end.

He noted that the reputation of the College of Medical Sciences began to suffer when student enrolment exceeded approved carrying capacities across several programmes.

According to him, the administration is determined to restore standards and safeguard the integrity of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the University would strictly adhere to admissions approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), adding that the central admission process would be fully reinstated to promote transparency and accountability.

The University helmsman assured that difficult but necessary decisions would be taken to protect the image and credibility of the University.

Prof. Offiong further disclosed that clear and comprehensive admission guidelines would be introduced to determine eligibility into all programmes.

He assured prospective students and parents that there would be no exploitation, stressing that no money would be exchanged for admission under his leadership.

The Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation for the visit and described the College of Medical Sciences as the flagship of the University of Calabar.

He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the challenges confronting the College and strengthening its academic and infrastructural capacity.

Earlier, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Ngim Ngim, highlighted several challenges facing the College, including over-admission, inadequate dental chairs, shortage of academic staff, poorly equipped laboratories, lack of student buses, and the need for renovation of hostels.

Prof. Ngim appealed to the Vice-Chancellor for urgent intervention in these areas and assured him of the readiness of staff to work collaboratively with the University management to ensure the growth, stability, and success of the current administration.
