UNICAL Journalism Department Seeks Closer Ties with NUJ for Practical Training
By Benjamin GBOR
The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Calabar, has moved to strengthen its working relationship with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, as part of efforts to improve practical training for students.
The move was made on Tuesday when the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Kwita Dan-Obo, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.
Speaking during the visit, Dan-Obo said the idea is simple — to connect what is taught in the classroom with what actually happens in the field. She noted that journalism training cannot be complete without real newsroom experience.
She added that as a newly unbundled department, there is a need to build stronger industry links and give students more exposure to the realities of the profession.
“We teach the theory in school, but the real work happens here. That’s why we felt it was important to come and partner with the NUJ so our students can learn directly from the field,” she said.
On her part, NUJ Chairman Archibong Bassey welcomed the move, describing the relationship between the union and journalism schools in the state as something that has always existed.
She assured the department that the union remains open to collaboration, especially in areas like internships and field training that will help students understand how the profession truly works.
“It’s one thing to learn in class, and another to face the realities outside. We will continue to support anything that helps students grow into better journalists,” she said.
Bassey also mentioned that issues around student membership would be clarified in line with NUJ guidelines.
