NUJ Chairman Advocates Deployment of Counsellors to Public Schools in Akwa Ibom

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has called for the posting of trained counsellors to all public schools in the state to guide students in choosing appropriate career paths and addressing personal and academic challenges through professional advice.

Comrade John made this known when the Counseling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), led by its National President, Prof. Ike Ifelumi, paid a courtesy visit to the Akwa Ibom State NUJ leadership at the Press Centre on Information Drive, Uyo yesterday. Speaking during the visit, the NUJ Chairman stressed the importance of counselling in the school system, drawing from his personal experience.

He said: "For me, I understand the role of a counsellor in the school system because we had one in our school. He was able to sit in the office and talk to students as long as possible. He was very patient. At the end of SS1, as you are going to SS2, that is where you decide whether to do Science or Arts. And in most cases, it is the counselor that tells you what to do. They would look at your result from the onset and decide, based on your strengths and weaknesses, which area would be good for you. So, the role of a counsellor cannot be overemphasized."

He further reaffirmed the union’s commitment to supporting CASSON, stating: "To that extent too, we will not be tired of supporting the Counseling Association of Nigeria."

Comrade John also lauded the leadership of CASSON, particularly the National President and the Akwa Ibom State Chairman, Prof. Ime George, who doubles as Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, for choosing the state to host the association’s 50th anniversary celebration. He noted that the association’s contributions to society over the years have been significant and impactful.
