The Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Lawrence Etta, has expressed optimism that Cross River State will deliver an outstanding performance at the 2nd Niger Delta Games currently underway in Edo State.
Speaking on the sidelines of the regional sporting event, which commenced yesterday, Etta said the state’s athletes are fully prepared to compete with excellence and discipline. “We are ready to make Cross River proud. Our athletes have undergone intensive preparation and are determined to compete with passion and sportsmanship,” he stated.
Etta explained that the state invested significantly in both the physical and mental preparation of its contingent to ensure optimal performance. According to him, careful planning, structured training sessions and adequate support systems were put in place ahead of the competition. “This is an opportunity for Cross River to showcase its rich sporting talents, discipline and dedication on a regional stage,” he added.
He disclosed that the state is represented by a contingent of 297 athletes drawn from the 18 local government areas, participating in all 16 sporting events featured at the Games. Etta noted that all athletes representing the state are indigenes, in line with the directive of the Niger Delta Development Commission, organizers of the Games. He commended the initiative, saying it aligns with the objective of discovering, nurturing and projecting local talents to national and international prominence.
Etta also called on residents and stakeholders to support the team throughout the competition. “Every medal earned will reflect not only the hard work of our athletes but also the collective spirit and resilience of the people of Cross River,” he said.
The 2nd Niger Delta Games has drawn participants from across the region and is designed to foster unity, youth development and healthy competition among the participating states.
Etta expressed confidence that Cross River will make a lasting impression and further strengthen its reputation as a hub for sporting excellence in the Niger Delta region.
