Pandemonium As Hoodlums Attack UNICAL's Female Hostel, Cart Away Students' Valuables

There was pandemonium at University of Calabar as hoodlums attacked female host (Hall 9) and carted away students' property and valuables.

Eye-witness said the inident happened about 2:00am on Saturday when gunmen numbering over 15 stormed the hostel, shot sporadically into the air to scare away students before carrying out operations.

The witness, who identifies herself as Katherin said that one of the robbers, who acme back late and disguised as a female student, returned late and knocked for the door to be opened for her without knowing the she came back alongside the robbers.

On entering the hostel, the hoodlums went from room to room robbed the students and carted away valuables like phones, laptops, power banks, foodstuffs and clothes.

Katherin said the armed men robbed the hostel for about 30 minutes before the intervention of the school's security team who came and fired tear gas, although none of the hoodlums was arrested.

Some of the victims who spoke to The Beagle News in tears lamented the ugly situation, stressing that it is their worst experience ever.

One of the victims, who pleaded anonymity, said: "It is hight time with the school authourities took drastic measures to protect the students even if it means introducing security levy to assist the management to secure the environment.

"The authourities should meanwhile beef up security around the hostel premises."
