OGOJA COUNCIL CHAIRMAN APPEALS FOR URGENT INTERVENTION OVER WINDSTORM IN IGODOR COMMUNITY

The Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Council, Chief Hon. Christopher Agbeh, has appealed to the Cross River State Government, Federal authorities, and relevant emergency agencies to urgently come to the aid of victims affected by a devastating windstorm that struck Njegbeje Village in the Igodor Community, Nkum Iborr Ward of Ogoja Local Government Area.
The Chairman made this passionate call during an on-the-spot assessment of the level of destruction caused by the windstorm, which left hundreds homeless and caused the loss of property worth billions of Naira. Chief Agbeh described the event as a "monumental and unnatural disaster," and emphasized the urgent need for immediate intervention to restore normalcy to the affected community.
“This is a tragic situation that requires swift action from both the State and Federal Governments,” he said. “The present administration is responsive and compassionate, and I will ensure that relief materials and support for the rebuilding of homes are provided promptly.”
The windstorm, likened to a mini-tsunami by locals, destroyed residential buildings, farmlands, and economic trees, disrupting the lives and livelihoods of residents.
In his remarks, the Village Head of Njegbeje, Chief Matthew Igrami Egbor, lamented the severe impact of the disaster, describing it as the worst natural incident in the community's history.
“This disaster took us completely by surprise,” Chief Egbor said. “Homes, farms, and our economic trees were all swept away. Many of us are now sleeping on bare ground under makeshift shelters. Starvation and homelessness are setting in.”
He appealed to all relevant government bodies and humanitarian organizations to come to their aid swiftly, stressing that the community is in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical assistance.
The Ogoja Local Government Council urges the media and concerned citizens to help amplify this call for emergency response as recovery efforts begin.
