THE University of Calabar Governing Council has reviewed the requirements for candidates applying for VC position, saying that Professors with Medical Fellowship are free to apply for the plum job without fear of disqualification.
This was contained in a letter with reference No UC/REG/GC/39C dated June 17, 2025 and signed by the institution's registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha.
The letter addressed to the Chairman, Medical & Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MOCAN) university of Calabar Teaching Hospital Chapter, Calabar, reads in part:
"The Governing Council of the University has deliberated on the appeal made by MOCAN for the Inclusion of Medical Fellowship side by side with the Ph.D. as a requirement for candidates applying for the position of Vice-Chancellor as advertised in the Daily Sun, Leadership Newspaper and Chronicle of May 27, 2025.
"The Council has agreed with MOCAN and resolved that Medical Feltowship shall be accepted in place of a Ph.D. for candidates applying for Vice-Chancellorship in consonance with the established practice of the University of Calabar.
"Consequently, qualified and interested Professors with Medical Fellowship are free to apply and vie for the position of Vice-Chancellor without any fear of disqualification.
"The Council appreciates MOCAN and its members for their contributions to the development of the university, especially in the training of our medical and dental students.
" It is in recognition of this that the Council had a meeting with the Clinical Lecturers on 17th June 2025, at which the position above was reached. The Council hopes that, to reciprocate this gesture, medical and dental consultants will continue to render quality services to the University and humanity."
