FG To Set Up Committee for SSANU’s Withheld Salary Payment

The Federal Government has agreed to establish a committee to address the demands of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions.
The resolution was the outcome of a meeting held on Friday between the leadership of the Joint Action Committee of both unions and government officials led by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
Also present were the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, and other officials.
SSANU had asked the Federal Government to release the remaining two months withheld salaries of its members who participated in the 2022 strike.
In a communique issued last week and signed by the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, the union also lamented what it called persistent delay in salary payments to federal universities, often weeks after other federal workers have been paid.
It also decried the allocation of the N50bn earned allowance, where it said only 20 per cent which amounted to N10bn was allocated to the members of the three non-teaching unions comprising SSANU; NASU and NAAT.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting on Friday by the NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions confirmed that the government agreed to constitute a special committee to address their grievances.
They stated that the committee would deliver a structured response to the demands and outline a clear path to resolution within one week.
