The Senator representing the central senatorial district of Cross River State Senator Eteng Williams has expressed concerns over the growing disregard for the Federal Character Principle as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution as regards appointments and employments.
The Senator who made the observation during an investigative hearing into the widespread violations of the Federal Character Principle by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) said the government must ensure balanced representation of all regions and ethnic groups in government appointments and public service.
While emphasizing that the continuous marginalization of certain groups undermines national unity and erodes public trust in government institutions, Eteng insisted that there must be strict adherence to the guidelines set out by the Federal Character Commission as well as transparency and accountability in all recruitment and promotion exercises.
“This investigation is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step to restore confidence in our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian has an equal opportunity to serve and benefit from the nation’s resources.
“We must follow the provisions of the federal character, any agency found guilty of deliberate violation or manipulation of recruitment processes will be held accountable, with appropriate sanctions recommended” he stressed.
The hearing, which took place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, drew participation from top officials of key MDAs, members of the public, and civil society and was convened by the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs.
The Committee is expected to release a comprehensive report at the conclusion of the hearing, which will include recommendations aimed at strengthening compliance mechanisms and enhancing the oversight role of the Federal Character Commission.
