Cross River Water Board MD Sues State Security Adviser Over Alleged Assault

By Missang AKPET

The Managing Director of the Cross River State Water Board Limited, Mr. Godwin Nyiam, has initiated legal proceedings against the State Security Adviser, Major General Okoi Obono (rtd.), over an alleged incident of assault.

The civil suit, filed by Nyiam through his legal counsel, E.E. Osim & Co, seeks ₦500 million in damages for what he describes as public humiliation, physical pain, harassment, and emotional trauma. The alleged incident reportedly took place in April at the Fogg Petrol Station in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

In a petition addressed to the State Security Adviser, Nyiam’s lawyers allege that their client was physically assaulted—specifically, slapped—by Major General Obono in the presence of witnesses. The petition described the act as “intimidating, demeaning, and unbecoming of a public official,” and warned that failure to issue a formal apology would result in litigation.

The matter has since escalated, with the case now formally lodged in court.

When contacted by The Beagle News correspondent to respond to the allegations, Major General Obono declined to comment.

“Please, I’m not interested in that story. You people can write what you like,” he said before ending the call.

The case has attracted public attention due to the stature of the individuals involved and the sensitivity surrounding inter-agency conduct within government institutions.

As of press time, no official statement has been released by the office of the State Security Adviser or the state government regarding the matter.
