OPINION: CALL FOR FAIRNESS IN APPOINTMENT DISTRIBUTION IN CROSS RIVER STATE: A WARNING FOR 2027 ELECTIONS
ByEshebi Benjamin EshebiIs
The recent publication of appointments to Governing Council Chairmen and Members of Nigerian Higher Institutions in Nigeria has once again highlighted the long-standing issue of unequal distribution of appointments in Cross River State.
This disparity is not a new phenomenon, as past appointments of commissioners, Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), and Special Assistants (SAs) have followed a similar pattern.
In the past, some local governments have received a disproportionate number of appointments, with multiple commissioners, SSAs, and SAs, while others have been left with only one commissioner and a single SSA or SA. This lopsided approach has created a sense of marginalization and exclusion among the affected local governments.
The recent appointments have perpetuated this unfair distribution, some local governments receiving multiple appointments while others have few or none. This trend is not only unfair but also has far-reaching implications for the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The imbalance in appointment distribution is evident in the Governing Councils of Higher institutions released yesterday. Local governments that already have multiple commissioners, SSAs, and SAs have also secured two or three seats on these councils.
In contrast, local governments like Obanliku, which have been marginalized with only one commissioner and a single SSA, have been excluded from these councils altogether. This perpetuates the unfair distribution of appointments, further disenfranchising already neglected areas.
The consequences of this lopsided approach will be felt in the 2027 general elections. As the party faces the challenge of re-election, it is crucial to recognise that marginalising certain local governments will lead to disenfranchisement of loyal party members, reduced voter turnout in affected areas, loss of trust and confidence in the party leadership, increased opposition from disgruntled groups
We urge the leadership of Cross River State to address this issue promptly and ensure a more balanced approach to appointment distribution. Every local government deserves equal representation and opportunities. It is time to put an end to the mentality of favouring some areas over others.
We call on the state government to always review the appointment distribution and ensure fairness and equity to capture all the local government and also engage in dialogue with stakeholders from all local governments to address concerns and ensure inclusivity.
By doing so, we can build a stronger, more united APC in Cross River State, ensuring victory in the 2027 elections and a brighter future for all citizens.
