he gale of retirements that is almost rendering Cross River State Civil Service fallow, has propped up intrigues as to who stays and who goes. While some have been granted one-year extension of service, others are leaving in droves with unpaid retirement benefits. Of note is the extension of service notice that is lighting up fire in the State Fire Service Department. If there is any state government department that is only existing by name, it is the Fire Service Department.
The question on everyone’s lips is whether the extension of service granted the beneficiaries when they were due for retirement by April, 2023, is for meritorious service rendered, or reward for malfeasance? Under the watch of those staying put in that department, government property including generating sets at Akamkpa Local Government Area division disappeared into thin air. Under the watch of this same sacred cows of the Service, Fire Service Department next door corporate neighbour, the Judiciary, recorded series of over-night cross border pilfering.
The same novel approach to disciplinary strictures application on erring civil servants has instead rewarded those who should rather be shown the way out of service, with one-year extension of service, may be to further promote maladministration.
