Goldie Road Reconstruction: Residents, Business Owners Applaud Gov. Otu’s Intervention

By Stephannie Dickson

Residents and business owners along Goldie Street have expressed their appreciation for Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s administration over the ongoing road reconstruction project, which promises to bring much-needed relief and infrastructural improvement to the area.

For years, the road linking Goldie Street to adjoining streets in Calabar had been plagued by deep potholes, rendering it nearly impassable for commuters and residents. Despite repeated assurances from past administrations, including the immediate past government, the road remained in a deplorable state—until now.

Under the leadership of Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, significant progress has been made. In early December 2024, a construction company, apparently commissioned by the state government, mobilized to the site, marking the long-anticipated commencement of the project. The reconstruction, expected to span several months, is set to enhance transportation, improve accessibility, and boost economic activities in the area.

Mr. Prince Anthony, a resident of the area for over four decades, expressed both relief and concern.

“The previous government failed us, but this administration is keeping its promise. I’m pleased with how fast the project is progressing, but I hope they construct drainage systems on both sides of the road to prevent flooding during the rainy season. Overall, this project will have a positive impact on our community.”

Similarly, Miss Precious Chibuzor shared her optimism about the benefits of the new road, though she acknowledged some initial challenges.

“I’m eager to see how this project will improve our daily lives. The early stages of construction caused temporary inconveniences, including a flood in my home due to sand piled in front of my house. However, I’m confident the final outcome will be worth it. I just hope the project is completed before the rainy season so we can fully enjoy the benefits.”

“It’s amazing to see the progress. Though the ongoing work has slightly disrupted my daily routine, I’m willing to adjust for the greater good. Once completed, the road will reduce dust, improve health conditions, and provide a safer and more comfortable environment for our community. I commend the government’s effort and urge them to ensure timely completion.”

As construction continues, residents and business owners remain optimistic about the road’s completion, viewing it as a catalyst for growth and development in the area. While short-term disruptions are inevitable, the long-term benefits of improved infrastructure, safer transportation, and a revitalized business environment far outweigh the temporary inconveniences.

The people of Goldie Street eagerly anticipate the day they can enjoy a modern, well-paved road that enhances both their quality of life and economic opportunities. Governor Otu’s administration has taken a decisive step in addressing a longstanding issue, and the residents are watching closely, hopeful that this project will be completed efficiently and set a new standard for infrastructural development in Cross River State.
