Guinea Seeks Review of 1976 AFCON Title After CAF Verdict

By Ekanem ASUQUO

Guinea has formally launched a bid to reclaim the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations title, urging the Confederation of African Football to revisit the historic tournament in light of recent disciplinary decisions.

The move follows CAF’s controversial ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and awarded it to Morocco after a walkout during the final, a decision that has sparked widespread debate across the football world.

Guinea’s football authorities argue that the same standard applied in the Senegal case should be extended to the 1976 tournament, where Morocco were crowned champions despite a similar incident.

During the निर्णsing match of the 1976 competition, Guinea needed a victory to secure the title and took the lead through Chérif Souleymane. However, Moroccan players reportedly walked off the pitch in protest over a refereeing decision before later returning to complete the game.

The match eventually ended 1–1, a result that handed Morocco the title under the round robin format used at the time, with Guinea finishing second.

Guinea now contends that if CAF can retroactively sanction teams for abandoning matches, as seen in the Senegal case, then the 1976 outcome should also be reviewed, with the title potentially reassigned.

The federation maintains that consistency in the application of football regulations is essential to preserving fairness and credibility in African football.

However, the case faces legal and procedural hurdles, as the regulations used to penalise Senegal were not in force in 1976 and are rarely applied retroactively.

CAF has yet to issue an official response to Guinea’s request, but the appeal is already generating fresh debate over historical decisions and governance within African football.
