Police in Niger State have taken into custody a 65 year old man, Musa Gado, over allegations that he impregnated his 16 year old granddaughter.
The incident was confirmed by the Director General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Kaltume Mohammed, during a media briefing in Minna.
She said the case was reported in October 2025 by the girl’s father, who alleged that the suspect had repeatedly sexually abused the teenager. At the time of the report, the victim was already six months pregnant.
According to the agency, the girl was taken into protective custody where she received medical care and support until she gave birth to a baby boy in December 2025.
Mohammed explained that the suspect initially denied responsibility, prompting authorities to conduct a DNA test to establish paternity. The test, carried out in a laboratory outside Nigeria, later confirmed with a 99.9999 per cent probability that the suspect is the biological father of the child.
She further disclosed that attempts were made to terminate the pregnancy before the matter was officially reported, but the efforts did not succeed.
Following the confirmation, the case was transferred to the police for further investigation. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
The agency expressed concern over the rising cases of child abuse in the state, revealing that several similar cases are currently under investigation, and called for stronger community vigilance to safeguard children.
