Delta Police To Probe Effurun Killing

The Delta Police Command has launched a full scale investigation into the killing of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The move follows the alleged unlawful killing of the suspect, an incident the police described as “deeply regrettable” and one that has drawn serious concern within the command and among members of the public. Police authorities said the development is now under close scrutiny to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal outcome, insisting that “no officer will be shielded if found culpable,” as all operational actions involved will be subjected to thorough review in line with established procedures.

The incident reportedly occurred after operatives of the Effurun Area Command acted on credible intelligence from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri Sapele Expressway, where members of a transport union had earlier apprehended him while allegedly attempting to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

He was subsequently handed over to police operatives for lawful custody. However, during the process of taking him into custody, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of operational procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.

In a statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon, the Force Public Relations Officer, the police leadership directed the immediate transfer of the officer and members of his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The statement stressed that the Inspector General of Police has ordered that “all those involved must be made to account for their actions” as part of efforts to ensure accountability and transparency.

The affected officers are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for investigation, disciplinary action, and possible prosecution.

The statement further disclosed that the Inspector General of Police has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice will be served in accordance with the law, noting that “the Force remains committed to upholding the rule of law regardless of status or circumstance.”

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and law abiding as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.

The Force reaffirmed its zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct capable of undermining public trust, stressing its commitment to accountability and professional policing standards.
