Cross River Assembly Confirms New Sports Commission Board

The Cross River State House of Assembly has approved the list of nominees submitted by Governor Bassey Edet Otu for the reconstituted board of the Cross River State Sports Commission.
Those confirmed include Etta Lawrence Itanya as Chairman, along with Queen Gladys Festus, Hon. Njarani Gabriel Ushie, Sunny Ndep Ebam and Ekpenyong Effiom Okon as members.
The new board is expected to revitalise the state’s sports sector, which many observers say has been performing below expectations despite Cross River’s once enviable record in national sports. With the constitution of the board, analysts are also calling for the scrapping of the Sports Ministry, as obtained at the federal level, to prevent duplication of functions, clashes of interest and unnecessary friction.

Reacting after his confirmation, Chairman Etta Lawrence Itanya expressed deep appreciation, thanking God for the opportunity and Governor Otu for the confidence reposed in the team. He pledged that the Commission would uphold its mandate with integrity and work diligently to restore sports development in the state to a position of pride.
He assured that the Commission will develop and pursue the state’s sporting agenda with renewed commitment, focusing on athlete development, talent grooming and raising the profile of Cross River State in national and international competitions.
