The Federal Fire Service on Thursday inaugurated new fire stations in Ugep and Ikom, which was facilitated by Eteng

Controller Williams, who oversees the Federal Fire Service in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states and who represented the Controller General at the ceremony, commended Senator Eteng Jonah Williams for his persistent advocacy that made the establishment of the stations possible.

Williama said: "Sen Eteng urged me several times to establish a Federal Fire Service in Yakurr and Ikom. Today we finally have a presence here in Yakurr,” he said. He also commended Yakurr local government chairman, Hon. Yibala Igri Inyang, for providing temporary office space for the new unit.

Representing the senator, Mr. Ikoi Uket Eteng, also known as Benbruse, thanked the Federal Fire Service for responding to the senator’s consistent requests. He noted that the development reflects Senator Williams’ determination to attract federal projects and strengthen essential infrastructure across the Central Senatorial District. The new fire unit will be led by OC Ofem Ubana Edet.

After the inauguration, Mr. Ikoi Uket Eteng led Controller Williams and his delegation to the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Yakurr and Obol Lopon of Ugep, Obol Ofem Ubana.

The monarch offered royal blessings and pledged a parcel of land for a permanent fire-service complex, adding that discussions with the council chairman would continue.

Controller Williams further revealed that firefighting equipment would soon be deployed to both Ugep and Ikom, with additional personnel expected to join the stations. He noted, however, that specific figures and timelines were still being finalized.

The delegation later visited former House of Representatives member Chief Obeten Okorn, who applauded Senator Williams for facilitating the establishment of the new emergency-response facilities.

The launch of the Federal Fire Service stations in Yakurr and Ikom is expected to significantly improve safety, enhance protection of lives and property, support local businesses, and strengthen overall emergency infrastructure in the region. It also underscores Senator Eteng Jonah Williams’ commitment to improving public service delivery across Cross River Central Senatorial District.
