Senate Passes Bill to Establish Federal University of Education, Obudu, Cross River State
The Senate on Thursday passed a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Education, Obudu, in Cross River State.
The University will be a significant step aimed at expanding access to higher education and strengthening teacher education in Nigeria.
The bill, sponsored by the Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, was passed after due considerations and subsequent adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.
The Federal University of Education, Obudu, Cross River State Establishment Bill seeks to establish the institution as a specialised university dedicated to promoting and advancing teacher education in Nigeria.
Presenting the committee’s report, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina South), said the proposed university would improve access to higher education and help address the growing demand for qualified teachers across the country.
Senator Dandutse disclosed that the committee conducted a public hearing on the bill in May 2025, during which stakeholders expressed their support for the proposed establishment of the institution.
Commending the passage of the bill, its sponsor, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, said the initiative was aimed at upgrading the existing Federal College of Education in Obudu into a federal university, thereby leveraging its existing infrastructure, facilities, and human resources to expand access to higher education.
He added that the establishment of the university would create more learning opportunities and promote access to education without discrimination based on race, creed, sex, or political conviction.
Senator Jarigbe also called on well-meaning sons and daughters of Cross River North Senatorial District to support the initiative and sustain the collective efforts towards ensuring that the bill receives presidential assent from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I am confident that Mr President understands the importance of this bill and will not let our people down. That is why we are going to support him,” Senator Jarigbe added.
