Salutations to Olusegun Obasanjo @ 89

From the fertile fields of Abeokuta rose a resolute reformer, a soldier-statesman seasoned by struggle and steeped in the storied sagas of a searching nation. Our salutations and sonorous salutations to Olusegun Obasanjo at eighty-nine. From the stern seasons of service in the barracks to the solemn seats of state in Nigeria’s bustling capital, his journey has jostled with the jagged turns of history. When the smoke of the Nigerian Civil War settled and the young republic wrestled with wounds and worries, he stood among the stewards striving for stability, later guiding the graceful governmental handover that ended military rule in 1979, an act etched in the annals of African accountability.

Decades later, destiny again summoned the steadfast son of Ogun soil. In 1999, as the drums of democracy returned after the long, leaden years that followed the annulment crisis tied to the 1993 Nigerian presidential election, he stepped forward with sober resolve to steady the republic. His administration pursued programmes of prudence and progress, as well as debt diplomacy that helped free the federation from crushing external obligations. Also, we owe him thanks for the civil-service reforms that sought structure and service, and the determined drive against corruption through the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission. These were bold bids to bind integrity to governance.

Under his watch, telecommunication transformation turned silent towns into talking territories, as liberalisation opened the airwaves and amplified access across the land. Agricultural advocacy, infrastructural initiatives, and regional diplomacy echoed his enduring emphasis on a stable, self-sustaining state. In continental councils he spoke with the seasoned voice of a statesman, helping to shape the spirit of the African Union’s early years and championing cooperative growth through the New Partnership for Africa's Development.

Through turbulent trials and triumphant turns, he has repeatedly preached the persistent promise of a united and peaceful Nigeria, calling for concord among cultures, calm amid contention, and citizenship above sectionalism. His voice, vigorous and sometimes vehement, has nonetheless remained tethered to the larger longing for national harmony.

So today, amid memory and meaning, the nation salutes a seasoned sentinel of statecraft. May the years ahead grant Olusegun Obasanjo continued clarity of counsel, strength of spirit, and the quiet, comforting satisfaction that comes when a life of long labour leaves lasting landmarks in the living landscape of a nation. May health hold him, may hope hearten him, and may his wisdom still whisper guidance to generations yet gathering in the grand, unfolding story of Nigeria.

Happy birthday, Chief.
