Royal Mother Launches Foundation to Support Vulnerable Communities in Yakurr

From Ogarekpe OGAREKPE, Ugep
The wife of the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, Her Majesty Grace Ofem Ubana, has launched her non-governmental organization, the Grace Ofem Ubana Foundation. The Foundation is said to be dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals and communities across Yakurr local government area.
Speaking during the launch ceremony at the Umor Otutu Palace recently, Her Majesty said the foundation would focus on key areas such as education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, and cultural preservation.
“This foundation is born out of a deep desire to uplift the vulnerable, promote dignity and resilience, and create opportunities for growth. It is our hope that the impact of this work will be felt across every community in Yakurr and beyond. But we cannot do it alone—we call on everyone to support and partner with us,” she said.
The foundation, though formally unveiled at the weekend, was established three years ago and has already recorded several milestones. These include the awarding of 40 academic scholarships, organizing free medical outreach for over 750 people, training 50 women and youths in vocational skills—with starter kits provided—and supporting 200 vulnerable children with school supplies. In addition, 300 households received COVID-19 relief packages, including food and hygiene items.
Lending his support, the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, praised his wife’s humanitarian initiative and assured the community of the foundation’s legitimacy.
“As the head of the traditional institution in Yakurr, I fully support this noble vision. It brings me great pride to see Her Majesty championing the needs of the less privileged. I urge beneficiaries to use this opportunity wisely,” he said
Representing the Chairman of Yakurr LGA, Hon. Obol Yibala Igiri Inyang, the Vice Chairman, Pastor Dr. Keppy Obeten, pledged the council’s full support.
“This initiative aligns with our mission to improve the lives of our people, especially the youth and the vulnerable. We will support the foundation in any way needed and encourage the Board of Trustees to ensure that their actions reflect the noble mission of the foundation,” Dr. Obeten said
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Barr. Obeten Okoi Okoi, commended the foundation’s commitment to social development and charged beneficiaries, particularly students, to stay focused.
“This is a unique opportunity—don’t take it for granted. Shun all vices and concentrate on your education. You are the leaders of tomorrow,” he advised.
Also speaking, the President and Governor of the Ugep People’s Consultative Forum, Professor Oka Martin Obono, promised continued collaboration with the foundation.
“We commend Her Majesty’s passion and vision. The Ugep People’s Consultative Forum is ready to partner with the foundation in the areas of education, health, and culture. The peace and unity of the Yakurr Nation must remain paramount as we work together for our collective upliftment,” he stated.
The event concluded with the official commissioning of the foundation’s office by Pastor Dr. Keppy Obeten, followed by the presentation of books and school bags to local pupils.
