Opinion: Papa DC Enahme: A Constant Northern Star:
In the murky waters of anomie into which our dear country has descended, only a few individuals stand out as truly selfless, patriotic, compassionate, and honest. One such person is the inimitable Dr. DC Enahme—lawyer, sociologist, scholar, socialite, and politician.
I have known him for more than four decades as a classmate, schoolmate, friend, and ideological soul mate. As teenagers at the prestigious Mary Knoll College, Okuku Ogoja, Cross River State, we shared youthful adventures. Among them was instigating a rebellion against students of the old Cross River State School of Basic Studies, who were oppressing junior students of Mary Knoll College. That school was temporarily hosted there before eventually moving to Akamkpa, its permanent site (now the University of Education and Entrepreneurship).
DC is a truly selfless and patriotic Nigerian who consistently fights for public causes. He is as constant as the Northern Star in his character, both in his personal and public life. He pioneered the Movement for the Creation of Ogoja State and has fought tirelessly with intellect and might for its realization.
When Senate President (1979–1983) Dr. Joseph Wayas died in London and his body remained in a morgue for nearly four years, it was DC who, with messianic zeal, fought to ensure the body was returned to Nigeria for a decent burial. His nationalist fervor is equally evident in his resolute fight for the rehabilitation of the Belegete community in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State after it was overrun by Ambazonian rebels who strayed into Nigeria during a cross-border skirmish.
DC’s reputation and patriotism are well documented. Recently, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, poured encomiums on him, acknowledging his unwavering love for the state and his readiness to fight for causes that benefit the people, even when he stood to gain nothing personally. Sadly, successive administrations have failed to accord him the recognition and patronage he so richly deserves.
Conclusion
Dr. DC Enahme remains a beacon of integrity, patriotism, and selflessness in a time when such qualities are rare. His life and struggles remind us that true leadership is not about personal gain but about service to humanity and the nation.
