The Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, has nominated Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North Senatorial District, for the Senator of the Year 2026 Award in recognition of his legislative performance and contributions to national development.

The honour forms part of activities lined up for the 2026 NUJ FCT Council Press Week, with the award ceremony scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Lagos Osun Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

In a nomination letter jointly signed by the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, and the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Obas Esiedesa, the union said the decision was based on Senator Jarigbe’s outstanding legislative record, leadership qualities, and commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

The Council commended his efforts in promoting responsive representation, community development initiatives, youth empowerment programmes, and advocacy for policies that support social justice and inclusive economic growth.

It further noted that the senator has consistently used his role in the National Assembly to strengthen democratic institutions, promote transparency, and ensure that the interests of Cross River North are well represented in national policymaking.

According to the NUJ FCT Council, the Senator of the Year Award is one of the flagship recognitions of its annual Press Week, designed to honour public office holders who demonstrate integrity, performance, and impactful service to society.

The organisers explained that recipients are selected through careful media evaluation and considerations of public interest, with emphasis on contributions to democratic governance and national progress.

This year’s Press Week is themed 2027 Election Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation, reflecting growing concerns about information integrity and democratic sustainability.

The Council stated that Senator Jarigbe’s leadership style and commitment to democratic values align strongly with the ideals the award seeks to promote.

The NUJ FCT Council congratulated the senator on his nomination and expressed confidence in his continued contributions to national development and democratic consolidation.
