O

ne critical sector of the economy today is education and it is undoubtedly the key to technological advancement.

Benjamin Franklin, an American polymath buttressed the above position when he said that an investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Little wonder then that the Provost of the Cross River State College of Education, Dr. Benedict Igboh Ugbong while addressing students and guests at the recently held 14th regular and 5th combined matriculation ceremony of the college stated that the school established in 1990 and re-established in 2008 has been in the business of producing quality graduates who are currently contributing their quota to the nation's development in all spheres of human endeavour.

While providing highlight of the matriculation, Dr Ugbong said for the 2022/2023 session, the School is matriculating 310 National Certificate of Education, NCE holders and 137 Degree students are commencing their academic programmes. He disclosed that within the period under review the college had embarked on a massive infrastructural development which has given rise to the construction of a storey building each for the School of Education and School of Sciences, both buildings are now awaiting commissioning by the funders, TETFUND.

The college also has an enviable record in the academics as shown in the strides recorded thus far.

His words: The School successfully hosted the computer based test for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME organized by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB and the Cross River State College of Education, COE, Akamkpa is rated the best in South-South zone adding that another feat that has also brightened the reputation of the school is the graduation of the first batch of degree students with one student making first class and 22 others in the second class upper division.

The School's full accreditation status for all the 23 NCE programmes with two departments viz, computer science and Education including Cultural and Creative Arts Education, the approval granted by the National Commission for Colleges of Education shows readiness to make a difference in the education industry.

Similarly effort is being made by the College to ensure staff are equipped with the required skills and know how to meet the demands of the time and in this direction Dr. Ugbong commended the periodic training of both academic and non- academic staff in  computer skills and the facilitation of the sponsorship of over 14 academic staff to the United kingdom, USA, Dubai and Turkey for training on how to write research grants proposals and welcomed the provision of fund to over 45 academic staff to undertake institution based research.

However, even with the success registered so far, the college has its fair share of headaches which include upgrading the School to a degree awarding Institution, the engagement of more staff, provision of funds to build a perimeter fence to secure the college and provision of vehicles for logistics.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Augustine Odey while delivering his address at the ceremony corroborated the Provost stand on the very essence of education by acknowledging that "Matriculation ushers in a fresh hope of advancement for success for the intakes, individuals and the college as an institution saddled with the responsibility of human capital development both at middle and higher cadres of training."

Mr Odey said government was making effort to ensure that the vision and mission of the School are actualized in the interest of the people and lovers of Cross River state.

Knowing the Special place of education the Permanent Secretary stated that the state has left no stone unturned even with dwindling resources to continue to assist where necessary.

He recalled the early days of little beginning when the college was labeled as "a clearing in the forest" and lauded the leadership in the expansion of the school by erecting edifices that are befitting of a citadel of learning.

He noted with pride the quality products from the school which have attracted many from the Labour market to seek help from the school to recruit some of their products for their respective institutions.

Looking forward, the Permanent Secretary expressed the hope that the same trend would extend to the quality of graduates that would eventually pass out stressing that educational pursuit should be holistic.

He counselled the students to be obedient to constituted authority and shun all forms of violence and misdemeanour, strive hard to live up to expectations. The labour market is crowded, so only the good can survive it.

Undoubtedly, the Provost, Dr Benedict Igboh Ugbong has proved the inalienable fact that leaders do not require a life time to prepare or handle prescribed assignments.
