UCTH Inaugurates Ultra Modern Urology Clinic In Honour Of Nigeria's Pioneer Urologist

In a significant advancement for specialized healthcare in Nigeria, the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has officially opened a cutting-edge Urology Clinics Block.
This new facility is set to transform the diagnosis, treatment, and research of urological diseases in the region, with a particular focus on men's health.
The modern clinic boasts a spacious waiting area, comfortable consulting rooms, a fully equipped procedure room, and efficient support offices.
It is dedicated to the memory of the late Sir (Prof.) Edet Okon Nkposong, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 94. Prof. Nkposong was celebrated as Nigeria’s first urologist and a true trailblazer in Nigerian medicine, playing a pivotal role in establishing urological services nationwide.
His legacy of pioneering work, mentorship, and scholarly contributions will continue to inspire future generations through the naming of this clinic.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, UCTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme, described the new clinic as a major milestone.
He emphasized that it will significantly boost the hospital's capacity to manage a wide array of urological conditions, from kidney stones and urinary tract infections to complex prostate diseases.
Prof. Ikpeme also highlighted that "Beyond improving patient care, the new clinic will also expand the hospital’s research frontiers."
"The facility is already supporting two major international research collaborations focused on prostate cancer, underscoring its dual role as a center of clinical excellence and a hub for scientific advancement"
Mrs. Atim Iwang, responding on behalf of the Nkposong family, expressed profound appreciation to UCTH for what she called "a deeply thoughtful and fitting honour."
She noted that this gesture perfectly aligns with her father's lifelong dedication to saving lives through medicine.
"This recognition means a lot to our family. Our father dedicated his life to medicine and to mentoring others in the field.
To see his name on this facility is truly humbling," she added.
For the UCTH Department of Urology, the unveiling marks a new era of growth and excellence.
This facility significantly enhances the hospital’s standing as a leading provider of specialized medical services in Nigeria and across the West African subregion. Medical experts attending the event lauded the clinic as a crucial intervention to address the rising burden of urological diseases, particularly prostate cancer, which remains a leading cause of illness among men in the region.
Dignitaries and attendees alike congratulated the Department of Urology, the Nkposong family, and the entire UCTH community for what many described as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
