13th October 2023 - Bakassi and Akpabuyo

Hon. Grace Bassey, Founder and Executive Director of the Support for Girls, Boys, and Women Initiative (SUGBWi), celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child with an impactful event, engaging with students at Christian Diamond Secondary School in Bakassi and Government Secondary School in Ikot Ewa, Akpabuyo.

The event, organized under the theme "Our time is now, our rights, our Future," brought together students, teachers, and distinguished public figures, including Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jnr, Rt. Hon. Joseph Bassey, and Hon. Eyo Bassey. The collaborative effort aimed to commemorate this important day by addressing gender equity and emphasizing the essential role of girls and women in our communities.

Advocating for Gender Equity:

In her address, Hon. Grace Bassey highlighted the ongoing struggle for gender equity. She emphasized that equity is not just a matter of fairness but a fundamental issue of social justice. Advocating for equal opportunities for girls, she stressed that every girl deserves an equal chance to thrive, learn, and lead.

Promoting Women's Health:

The event also emphasized the critical importance of health for women. Hon. Grace Bassey expressed her concern about the adverse impact of preventable health issues on women and girls. The event included talks on health, particularly on issues such as cancer, aiming to empower young girls to make informed decisions about their well-being. It was highlighted that women's health is not just a personal matter but a fundamental right.

Empowering Through Skills Development:

Another key aspect of the program was empowering girls through skill development. Hon. Grace Bassey emphasized the significance of skills in providing economic independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose. By investing in girls' skills, they can thrive in a rapidly changing world.

The event served as a reminder that a brighter, more equitable future is only possible when we invest in the rights, health, and skills of our girls. It was a day to champion gender equity, advocate for women's health, and promote skill development. The presence of prominent figures from the political arena underlines the importance of such efforts. Hon. Grace Bassey and her team continue their mission to support and empower girls in Bakassi and Akpabuyo.

The Support for Girls, Boys, and Women Initiative, SUGBWi, is committed to advancing the rights and well-being of girls and women, nurturing a more equitable society for everyone.
