The Odukpani Local Government Council, led by the Executive Chairman, RT. Hon. Chief Ukpong Etim Asido, commemorated this year’s Children’s Day at the Local Government Headquarters.

The event brought together primary and secondary school children from across the LGA.

The children marched proudly with their school flags, while some schools presented cultural dances.

Also in attendance, were members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) currently serving in Odukpani, who participated actively and supported the smooth running of the event.

Chief Asido, while speaking at the event, emphasised the importance of children in nation-building, describing them as “natural treasures” whose potentials must be recognised and nurtured. “This year’s theme resonates deeply with me. It reminds us that our children are indeed a treasure — full of potential, waiting to be recognised, nurtured, and empowered,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders to prioritise education and child welfare, stating that, “As future leaders, our children deserve the best possible start in life. We must ensure their rights, welfare, and safety are protected and respected. Education is the key to unlocking their potential.”

Chief Asido expressed gratitude to the Cross River State Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for prioritising children’s education and development. He praised the governor’s leadership, saying, “Under his watchful care, classrooms are being constructed and renovated, echoing with the laughter of learning children.”

He also commended the efforts of the First Lady, Her Excellency Bishop Mrs. Eyoawan Otu, whose “Humanity Without Borders Empowerment Initiative” according to him, continues to uplift disadvantaged children through projects such as the Back to School programme, girl-child STEM empowerment, and health protection campaigns.

Chief Asido concluded with a call to action, urging parents, guardians, teachers, and community leaders to unite in nurturing and inspiring the younger generation. “Let us work together to provide opportunities that will help our children grow, learn, and thrive,” he said.
