By Ben GBOR
The Commissioner 1 in the Cross River State Local Government Service Commission, Dr. (Mrs) Carol Edem, has commended the leadership qualities of the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Council, Hon. Christopher Agbeh, describing him as an adept leader, well-equipped to manage both human and material resources aimed at alleviating the challenges faced by the community. She emphasized that, with the pace of developments underway in the Council, Ogoja is set to thrive.
Dr. Edem, who was on a tour of councils under her jurisdiction, expressed her gratitude to the Ogoja Council leadership for the warm reception she received. She assured the leadership that the Commission would be informed of key observations raised in Ogoja, including concerns such as the low representation of Ogoja indigenes in the recent civil service recruitment and the challenge of the Council operating without a junior workforce.
Receiving the Commissioner on behalf of the Council Chairman, the Council Secretary, Chief Alex Atem, thanked Dr. Edem for her visit. He noted that the meeting with Local Government functionaries was an important initiative for gathering firsthand information and insights. He urged the Commission to consider restructuring the Council's organs to improve productivity.
In another development, the Commissioner 1 paid a courtesy visit to the Leader of the Ogoja Legislative Council, Hon. Dr. Elizabeth Mbim. During the visit, Dr. Edem expressed her satisfaction with the harmonious working relationship in the Council, noting that the Leader's concerns would be conveyed to the Commission's Chairman.
In her welcome address, Hon. Dr. Elizabeth Mbim expressed concern over the recent imbalance in the senior staff recruitment process carried out by the Commission, where Ogoja indigenes were not adequately represented. The Leader also called for the immediate approval of the recruitment of junior staff within the Council, as officers are struggling to afford hired labour.
