NSE, Doles Out Scholarship Awards To 10 Students, Others.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Calabar branch, has presented scholarship awards to ten deserving higher institution students from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) and the University of Cross River State ( UNICROSS) respectively.
Awardees were all students of the Engineering department from both institutions.
Also honoured were two past Chairmen of the NSE, Calabar Branch - Engr. Umoudoe Bassey Ekong and Engr. Ndifon Agbiji for rendering meritorious and selfless service to humanity through engineering practice.
Under the Corporate award category, Skyrun International limited and Sermatech Nigeria limited were recognized in appreciation for their contributions to the benefit of the mankind by Sustaining their Corporate social responsibility.
The awards were presented at the induction and dinner night held to climax the week - long activities of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), with the theme: "Improving quality of construction materials to reduce the menace of infrastructure collapse in Nigeria".
In his address at occasion,the Commissioner for Works and infrastructure, Cross River State, Engr. Ankpo Edet, stated government willingness to work in tandem with members of the Calabar branch of NSE towards the realization of its quest to provide infrastructure and amenities to various Communities in Cross River.
Engr Edet commended Sermatech Nigeria limited for the magnanimous Scholarship award to ten undergraduate students, six out of which were Cross Riverians and lauded the company for competing favourably with outstanding construction companies like Julius Berger.
He charged members of the association not to compromise standards and pleaded with
Engineers to shun enticements so as not to compromise standards but to up hold the ethics of the profession.
He challenge local Engineers to go into the field, procure equipment and acquire tools for practical construction work and assured of the ministry's readiness to partner NSE members.
Earlier , the Chairman, NSE, Calabar branch, Engr. Desmond Ewa disclosed that the association made tremendous progress in the past one year which took the Calabar branch to the twelveth position out of eighty - seven worldwide while it also carried out a number of complementary social activities including strengthening of its spouses forum.
He appealed to the State government to engage members of NSE in it's construction projects to encourage local contractors.
Parents of the Awardees thanked Sermatech and the Calabar branch of NSE for the kind gesture which they said will go along way to assist the students in their educational pursuit.
In a public lecture, a University Don from the University of Calabar, Professor Odey Osha called for the establishment of a National Cement Institute (NCI) to guide the formulation of cement production and utilization policy in the country.
The lecture titled "Addressing Building Collapse; the material connection" emphasized that there is no 'fake' cement in Nigeria, explaining that the ignorance of different types and grades of cement and their misapplications was responsible for the incessant building collapse witnessed in the country.
