Defection: Since 1999, PDP Has Treated Akwa Ibom Unfairly — Chief Assam Assam

A recent article by Chief Assam E. Assam, SAN, former Nigerian Ambassador to Russia, has sparked renewed debate over the relevance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State. In the piece, Chief Assam accused the PDP of consistently marginalizing the state since 1999, arguing that the party has treated Akwa Ibom as little more than a political pawn.

He cited decades of neglect as the reason many loyal supporters have lost faith in the PDP, despite the state’s long-standing allegiance to the party.

Chief Assam emphasized that the recent defection of Governor Umo Eno to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is rooted in the party’s demonstrated commitment to the state’s development.

“The governor’s move is a strategic step to secure Akwa Ibom’s future and foster meaningful progress,” he stated.

He further recalled how, under previous PDP administrations, including those of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Akwa Ibom remained largely overlooked, even as it consistently delivered massive electoral support.

In contrast, he commended the APC for recognizing and supporting the state. He pointed to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which, according to him, ensured Akwa Ibom benefited from key projects and federal appointments. He also noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to the state’s development cannot be overstated.

Chief Assam’s remarks have ignited fresh discourse on the PDP’s prospects in the state, particularly as the political landscape continues to shift. He questioned whether the party can regain the trust of its supporters or remain relevant in the face of growing dissatisfaction.

“The people of Akwa Ibom deserve respect, justice, and leadership that puts their interests first,” he asserted.
