Gov. Otu Applauds UNICROSS Alumni, Promises Institutional Transformation
Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has praised the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Alumni Association for their steadfast support and endorsement of the recent leadership changes at the institution.
In a direct message to the National President of the Alumni Association, Dr. Inyali Peter, Governor Otu assured that his administration is determined to transform the fortunes of UNICROSS, leveraging the alumni’s backing to drive sustainable growth and excellence at the university.
The Governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, announced the dissolution of the university’s 5th Governing Council on January 26, 2025, replacing it with the newly constituted 6th Council. This move, the Governor said, is aimed at positioning UNICROSS for enhanced performance and progress.
As part of the restructuring, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, a respected elder statesman and former Secretary to the State Government, has been appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 6th Governing Council. Hon. Franco Eta and Prof. Susan Etim were also appointed as external members representing the central and southern senatorial districts, respectively.
In addition, the Governor approved the appointment of Prof. Francisca Bassey as Acting Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Bassey officially took office on January 27, 2025, while the formal inauguration of the new council is expected in the coming days.
Governor Otu, who is the Visitor to the university, expressed gratitude to the alumni in a goodwill message, saying, “Thank you, my Presido, for the alumni’s unwavering support. UNICROSS must change for the better.”
The UNICROSS Alumni Association has been instrumental in advocating for leadership reform at the institution. Over the past months, they engaged key stakeholders, including the Governor, to push for changes that would ensure the university’s growth and development.
This recent leadership overhaul underlines Governor Otu’s commitment to repositioning UNICROSS as a hub of academic excellence and innovation, with the active support of its alumni and stakeholders.
