The senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District, Asuquo Ekpenyong, had visited the scene of the fire out break in Bogobiri in Calabar Cross River State and donated the sun of N1m to victims.
At the weekend, fire gutted a section of Bogobiri, a Muslim-dominated settlement in Calabar metropolis.
The inferno engulfed about 10 shops around the palm oil and pepper trading axis of Bogobiri.
Speaking during the visit, Ekpenyong, represented by the immediate past commissioner for transport Cross River State, Hon. Oqua E. Oqua expressed shock at the incident.
He said: "In an already difficult economy, such as ours, for a fire incident of this magnitude to occur and engulf over seventeen shops one can only imagine the economic loss to the victims.
"I am therefore donating the sum of N1,000,000 to the community to cushion the effects of this great loss to the victims," Senator stated.
Responding, Head of the Muslim Community in the area, Adamu Baba, thanked Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong for showing love to the affected victims.
According to him, "what the Senator has done today shows us that indeed he regards us as his own brothers. Elections are over so no one can accuse him of doing this because of politics.
"So this gesture today of showing love to the victims of this fire will go a long way in ameliorating the situation we have at hand and God will bless him. "
